Mucopolysaccharides (also called glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs) are long chains of sugar molecules found in connective tissues, skin, cartilage and similar structures in the body.
Studied in scalp/hair‐care contexts for effects beyond simple hydration. For example, a study of topical mucopolysaccharides in people with various types of hair loss (including seborrheic alopecia) found measurable improvements. They often function as hydrating/moisture-binding agents. For instance, hydrolyzed mucopolysaccharides are known to attract and bind water, thereby reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and helping maintain hydration.
